Description
This class will be focused on understanding the city as a social and cultural system. Through lectures and discussions we will explore how economic, demographic, and technological forces have contributed to the emergence, development, and continued evolution of cities. We will investigate how cities are inhabited, constructed, and spatially organized, and how this process has changed over time. The goal of the course is to gain a historically and geographically informed understanding of the ways in which cities are experienced and the culturally determined factors that drive their development. We will reference Los Angeles as a case study, and the class will include field trips in the city to discover evidence of change and social organization.
