Description

The seminar will focus on the recent shift in architectural research towards a new design paradigm at the convergence of Computation, Computational Materials, and Robotics. In the 1980?s architectural research was characterized by digital design using CAD, and analysis software; in the 1990?s parametric modeling and animation; and the 2000?s algorithmic processes and interactivity in design. The current decade 2010-2020 is about the eruption and corruption of the physical in the digital with robotics becoming the next generation design, computation, and fabrication platform. Artists and Architects are only starting to consciously aestheticize the raw material of this half-virtual world. The research seminar investigates this new aesthetic reality with particular attention to the transformation of conceptual frameworks, conventions of representation, and architecture?s ontologies.

The overarching goal of the seminar is to develop an entirely different notion of what it means to ma
