Course Description:
Students will participate in the design of a vertical garden grotto in the SCI-Arc parking lot. Re-purposing the Graduation Pavilion’s steel structure, and occupying some of the asphalt beneath, this hydroponic garden will consist of local plant species and well as exotic artificial plants (fake plastic trees…). The native plant selection and the design of artificial plants will be an essential aspect of this course; plants found and fabricated in the “Flower District.” In addition, the grotto’s atmospheric conditions will be transformed by PV-powered lighting, water misters, florescent pigments, smart materials, hanging habitats for birds and even sound. The garden grotto will operate as a working laboratory for atmospheric experimentation at SCI-Arc, a public display
