Description
The format of this course is a historical survey of urban design from the past 150 years, from 1870 to 2020. Urban systems by themselves are singular and limited and are often the responsibility of a specific engineering or social discipline. But the strategic integration of urban systems is the domain of the architect-planner and the bewildering variety of integrated systems will be framed and explained through the lens of this survey. The survey will highlight critical milestones—real and utopian projects—that shape the theory and practice of urban design and urban planning. These urban projects are by definition, connected with geo-political and socio-economic forces and its comprehension will enhance and expand your awareness of architecture’s role within the urban context.
