Description

This course is an intensive writing seminar that uses a single contemporary case study (reading) to demonstrate clear, concise, effective writing that can communicate complex ideas and positions.
Rigorous in-class exercises are used to quickly give students tools for good critical writing. First, a pin-up of single sentences of basic description will deprogram excessive and awkward writing. Next, short blocks of descriptive text can be linked together into longer critical analysis. The result will be a short opinion essay that relates to their personal interests (a theme).
These writing skills can be translated to any written material—from dissertations to client emails. Tying together journalistic methods with critical and conceptual practices will prepare students for writing for publications as well as for their own work, from RFP’s to their portfolio website. One-on-one mentoring helps students understand their own goals, needs, and areas of improvement.
