Description

This course surveys two main types of cultural text in the contemporary era: film and literature. Both are understood as careful practices of genre, voice, feeling, tone and craft in order to communicate a diverse complex of human emotions and thoughts. Emphasis is placed on the cultural diversity of both mediums, and urges students to utilize media persuasively and effectively through exemplary works. Students are asked to engage and analyze narrative-based films and literature with short writings and expository prose.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Information Reasoning. To present students with visual information, media and text and to ask them to draw reasonable conclusions and to ask critical and engaging questions from cinema and literature.
Communication. To require students to write concise short essays and reviews directly engaged with a diverse range of ideas and experiences.
Communication. To introduce students to narrative and its mediums.
