Art History I: Ancient to Modern Art History
Art History I introduces students to the history of art from prehistoric times to 20th-century modernism. Artistic styles, art movements, and methods of art production will be contextualized within larger societal, intellectual, and ideological shifts. Key art historical concepts such as form, medium, style, and iconography?and how avant-garde artists later questioned these terms?will be discussed. Topics covered include ancient and medieval art, Renaissance and Baroque art, Neoclassicism and Romanticism, photography and mass media, abstraction and primitivism, modernism and colonialism, among others.
