Description

Art History II practices depth in thinking, analyzing, interpreting and speculating a contemporary discourse on art and art production. It emphasizes the 20th century history of modern art and the recent history of the neo-avant-gardist and contemporary art practices in the United States and Europe, with a particular focus on writings, debates, lectures and other forms of public discourse on current works. Each year, the course will be dedicated to the work of one major artist and one local venue for contemporary art. Students will be asked to potentially contribute to discourse on the chosen artist and/or venue. Aesthetic categories and how these are deployed in contemporary cultural production are of primary concern.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Conscious Causality. To introduce advanced students to speculative thinking about art and cultural production in the modern and contemporary eras.
