Short Description: This course will provide a survey of major trends in Classical Chinese Philosophy, using the Hackett Publishing anthology edited by Philip J. Ivanhoe. Authors covered in the anthology include Confucius, Mozi, Mengzi, Laozi, Zhuangzi, Xunzi, and Han Feizi. The assignments in the class are a midterm paper, to be expanded after feedback into a longer final paper. Attendance and participation in class discussion are essential. We will try to consider some of the major similiarities and differences between Classical Chinese Philosophy and the classical European and Islamic philosophers covered in my recent electives, but there are no pre-requisites for taking this class.
