Short Description: This seminar is to develop skills in analyzing formal, contextual, and programmatic features of buildings. It will do so through the careful study and diagraming of a curated set of buildings. There will be both analyses of individual buildings, and comparative analyses of groups of buildings. The class is committed to novelty. Therefore, beyond analysis, diagraming will be used to identify unexplored possibilities in contemporary architecture, proposing new architectural arrangements that exploit those gaps. In this way diagrams will be used as both as a tool to engage current disciplinary questions and a leverage to move beyond them.
In addition to building diagrams there will be readings and discussions on related topics such as field diagrams, urban diagrams, movement diagrams, infographics, data visualization, diagrams as propaganda, diagrams as a form of protest and resistance, and di
