Description
This class will focus on representation and nature; we will look at and learn from our natural environment and elaborate drawing techniques that go beyond the image and expand into the material. As architects, we design with drawings that help us build buildings, but in this class, we will ‘build’ a drawing. The technique for building a drawing will come from painting and fabrication; by mixing paint brushes and CNC milling machines, we will create painterly surfaces that have been digitally manufactured but have the allure of a handmade craft as a kind of digital craft. To develop drawings and begin the design process, we will observe nature. The class will visit the Theodore Payne Foundation (https://theodorepayne.org/about/) and learn about plant species native to the Los Angeles region. The technique for representing nature will follow the teachings of John Ruskin in his book ‘Elements of Drawing’ from 1854; in this book, he asks that we look closely at nature. Beginning by drawing
