Description

Issey Miyake pleats a T-shirt. Frank Gehry corrugates a dutch-colonial. Ed Ruscha paints a ribbon. Each act is a radically new conception of what's possible in a discipline through material misbehaviors. This class will build on these acts by testing behaviors that stiffen and relax geometric and formal constructs. Over the semester, lectures and readings will examine techniques used in other historical case studies alongside contemporary examples in fashion, architecture, and art. We'll look to commercial outputs like pleating métiers and tent construction to find parallels between stiffening a weak material and weakening a geometric construct. An expanded toolset will introduce varying digital and physical techniques, from simulated pleating to 3D-printed fabric. Rhino and the fashion software CLO3D will be the primary digital tools for geometric development, material simulation, and rendering. Cricut machines, 3D printing, and hand tools from fashion design will allow us to study th
