Course Title: BITS + BOTS
SCI-Arc Applied Studies Elective Seminar Fall 2013
Instructor: Devyn Weiser
Bits and Bots explores the digital physical interface using SCI-Arc?s Robot House. In this decade, the convergence of software and hardware offer new possibilities for aesthetic expression with tactile outcomes. The seminar explores the role of maker, medium, and machine. Particular attention is given to the history of early computational visualization from the 1960?s onward, op and pop art, up through artists working in the post-medium condition. While grounding students in the debates underlying contemporary art and technology the seminar offers a hands-on laboratory for experimentation with spherical geometry, rheological materials, and motion control. Seminar participants have access to the Robot House's five six-axis robots, custom designed end-of-arm-tools (EoATs), and Grasshopper scripts for creating multi-axial, multi-robot motion paths. The course introduces students to t
