Short Description: For over a century, Los Angeles has been a critical location for prototyping new urban fantasies and realities that would spread across the globe. Beyond its almost incomprehensibly large influence through the creation of Hollywood, Los Angeles also made formative contributions to several predominant versions of suburbia, the automobile landscape more generally, typologies like strip malls and fast food restaurants, modern metropolitan regional infrastructure and concomitant haywire ecological transformations, “mid-century modernism,” Disneyland and other simulations, the space race, postmodernism as a larger cultural phenomenon, music genres like punk and hip hop, gated communities, and generations of science fiction’s ideas of what the near future might be like. Perhaps even more than New
