Description

Architecture is the discipline that organizes bodies in space. Walls, stairs, windows, doors are architectural elements that surround us and that we often fail to interrogate politically. The key is a small object in the architectural apparatus and yet, it enforces political regimes such as private property, settler colonialism, or carceralism. The spoon, on the other hand, allows to (slowly) affect architecture's power on bodies and even to escape from it as shown by the six Palestinian political prisoners' prison break in September 2021. Throughout the class, we will analyze the politics mobilized by these two objects, using architectural theory to better understand the history and present of colonialism and structural racism, and vice versa.
