A history of pedagogy is a history of institutions is a history of power. In spite of this—or perhaps
precisely for this reason—pedagogical techniques have historically afforded potent possibilities for
subversion, speculation, and insurgence, both within and against the discipline.
This seminar interrogates architecture education as a key site where design expertise has been
cultivated, codified, promulgated, tested, and resisted—that is, as the locus of the discipline’s very
formation. Through a heterogenous assemblage of techniques and instruments ranging from
syllabi and studio briefs to admissions criteria and hiring decisions, design schools have labored to
determine not only exactly what qualifies as an architectural thought, but so too who gets to
produce architecture. To restrict the pedagogical to the academy however would be to commit a
