Short Description: Addressing race and gender, and how they function within systems of power, has become a cultural imperative. In what ways have these issues been critically theorized and represented in artworks? How can we think of them anew, towards new ways of imagining and speaking about our subjective experiences and those of others? This course examines a diverse range of theoretical and artistic approaches to representing race, gender, and sexuality as well as the politics that lie therein, with a focus on the U.S. context. We will discuss writings and artworks by figures such as Fred Moten, bell hooks, Kimberle Crenshaw, Cheryl Harris, Judith Butler, Mel Y. Chen, Donna Haraway, Paul Preciado, Kara Walker, Coco Fusco, Cameron Rowland, William Pope.L, among others. Select practitioners in the contemporary art world will be
