THE HISTORY OF PUNK (MUSIC & FILM)

This semester?s focus will be on Punk Rock AND Film...meaning we will be examining both film AND media; namely, music, records, record sleeves, fashion, fanzines, icons AND images (both moving and still). We will begin by identifying what we mean by the term ?Punk,? given the indeterminacy of this category (Is it merely a style of music? Of fashion? A moment in time? Is there such thing as ?Punk Film??). We will begin our investigations by exploring the contradictory histories of Punk?in the UK, New York and California (L.A., Orange County and San Francisco). We will then consider the relationship between Punk and the society that initially produced and consumed these records, films, fanzines, fashions, icons, ideas. And, of course, the seemingly everlasting legacy that Punk has left behind (in music, film, fashion, youth culture, and the list goes on?)
