Description

VS2517.01 Beans, Labyrinths & Geometry

It's no surprise that for the general public CAD programs are about as easy to get into as
membership to a Masonic Lodge. For eons architects have liked it that way; if you control the art
of drawing, the profession retains the magic recipes of making.
Whilst learning about the elemental practice of geometry & number, the class will
examine how those arts became clothed in metaphor, creating rich stories that temper
geometry's latent divinity. In addition, Pythagorus' mystical use of beans will be uncovered, as
well as the geometric construction of the labyrinth - architecture's most elemental plan.
This is a hands-on class with not much use for computers. Drawing/scratching will be
conducted at the scale of the body, sometimes using finicky compasses and at other times
making trips to the ocean to use the best drawing board imaginable: the sandy beach. No need
for any prior knowledge for this class: beginners or experts, from 8 to 80
