Description
The seminar will look closely at the relationship between animate and inanimate matter in art and
architecture; in particular, the class will master various digital and analogue optical effects able to transform an
inanimate object into an animate one, through various modes of digital and physical representation.
The first part of the seminar will be a survey engineered to help students understand the potential of optical
effects in a digital environment and become familiar with subtle color interactions, basic knowledge of scripting
(Processing) and 2,5 sculpting (Zbush). These techniques will be instrumental to revisit the role of still life in
contemporary architectural education. During the second part of the class, students will experiment with materials like
diachronic films, light sensitive ink and lenticular prints in order to produce drawings that come alive with the motion
of the viewer. The class as a whole will engage in a conversation on the theatrical power of con
