Description
The built environment in which people live and work reflects the connection between physical spaces and the social/political context of its time. This VS seminar explores the various interpretations of “assembly” in multiple scales, from objects to architecture, and to its context. How can architectural representation reveal and highlight the deeper political and/or historical agenda of its time? The class will be using the Taylor Yard G2 site, a former railyard for the Southern Pacific Railroad but now an undeveloped, contaminated site next to the LA River, as its starting point. Students will design their own site-specific assembly using current and historical elements in Taylor Yard. Through analyzing precedents from data visualization, instructional manuals, and other architectural drawing types, they will experiment with various visual narrative techniques to re-present their assembly design and its context in a series of drawings.
