Description

The seminar will explore the value of being OffLINE. Building on the notion of stepping out of the digital (if only for a moment) or operating independent of systems, we will redefine roles of a model and a screen to evaluate how we draw the line between mediums. To be off is both a binary, the opposite of on, and a relative description of something a tick past acceptable. We will operate in the bit off aesthetic territory.
The split screen, a technique to capture two related but distinct scenes, will be the setup for our output of a set of framed models. These models will mix physical and digital conventions to challenge assumptions, finishes and techniques. The course will be divided into three segments, research, model building, and performing models. The segments can be completed individually or in pairs. The seminar will expand the role of model making and survey the shifting grounds of possible mediums both in class and via a few LA field trips. Animated models – both physical a
