Description

The seminar will make basic geometric forms using unconventional and relatively homogeneous raw materials. These forms, increasing in scale through the semester, will then be used to make novel tectonic arrangements. The work is intended as an advancement of experiments undertaken in other visual studies seminars including last fall’s “Color” and earlier seminars “Wood/Not Wood,” “Stacking Bricks and Pulling Prints,” and “Color outside the Line” (past course descriptions available on request). As with these, this seminar exploits visual studies’ license to place architecture in a promiscuous relationship to art—in this case by placing the work at the intersection of tectonic exploration and art practice.
The seminar begins with color. We will fully embrace the material there-ness of color by making forms out of colored pigment itself, purchased in its raw form by each student. Color will not be applied, projected, or printed, but rather will itself be physically shaped into geometric
