Short Description: This class will propose the design of a Tiny Town, located in the expansive Mohave desert, specifically the city of Llano, California. We will work in partnership with the non-profit entity titled Tiny Town, which is creating a retreat town for homeless moms and their kids. The challenge for this class will be to envision this community of houses, services, and landscape into multiple design scenarios, with a focus on the natural environment.
Not far from the site of Tiny Town, lay the ruins of the 1916 idealistic town of Llano del Rio, the Socialist utopian ideal city that created a self-sufficient town in the desert land. In Mike Davis’s prologue to his 1990 book titled City of Quartz, he describes the story of this social utopia as the counterpoint to the capitalist soul of Los Angeles city.
