Description

Grin
Inspired by Paul Laurence Dunbar's "We Wear the Mask," the course "Grin" explores the role of grillz in the Black American experience, resonating with Dunbar's portrayal of dualities in identity and resilience. We examine grillz as more than fashion, recognizing them as powerful expressions of identity that challenge societal norms, similar to the themes in Dunbar's poem. Students will actively design grillz using zBrush, encouraging them to think critically about the cultural, social, and racial messages these pieces convey. The course culminates in projects that reflect a comprehensive understanding of grillz as an intersection of art, identity, and social commentary, mirroring the complex narratives and truths akin to the masks in Dunbar's poem.
